What the test checks
Marks by strand: Number 22, Algebra 4, Measurement 6, Probability 3 (of 35). Questions worth 2 marks need two steps or some working, so give a mark for a correct method with a slip in the final answer.
| Code | Strand | What it asks for | Practised by |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC9M3N01 | Number | Order numbers beyond 10000. Recognise, represent and order natural numbers beyond ten thousand using standard naming and writing conventions. | Place Value |
| AC9M3N03 | Number | Add and subtract to three digits. Add and subtract two- and three-digit numbers by using place value to partition, rearrange and regroup. | Addition, Subtraction |
| AC9M3N04 | Number | Multiply and divide one and two digits. Multiply and divide one- and two-digit numbers, showing problems with number sentences, diagrams and arrays and using a range of strategies. | Multiplication |
| AC9M3N06 | Number | Model practical problems. Use mathematical modelling for everyday adding and multiplying problems, including money, by writing number sentences, choosing strategies and explaining the answer in context. | Word Problems |
| AC9M3A03 | Algebra | Facts for 3, 4, 5 and 10. Build fluency with multiplication facts for 3, 4, 5 and 10 and use them to work out the related division facts. | Fact Families |
| AC9M3M03 | Measurement | Units of time and duration. Use how days, hours, minutes and seconds relate to estimate and compare how long events take. | Elapsed Time |
| AC9M3P01 | Probability | Likely, unlikely, certain, impossible. Identify everyday events that involve chance and describe outcomes as likely or unlikely, and some as certain or impossible, explaining why. | Probability |
What to check alongside it
A written test cannot hold every Year 3 skill. These strands need a graph, a picture, a clock face or a drawn shape, so assess them with a worksheet or a hands-on task instead:
- Space (AC9M3SP01, AC9M3SP02): Year 3 geometry worksheets, Year 3 position & maps worksheets
- Statistics (AC9M3ST01, AC9M3ST02, AC9M3ST03)
Using the results
- Record the score by section, not just the total. A student with full marks on number but none on elapsed time needs different help from one who lost a mark in every section.
- Sections where most of the class dropped marks are the topics to revisit in the last weeks of term or to pass on to next year's teacher, with the AC9 code attached.
- Give Version A as a pre-test in Term 3 and Version B at the end of Term 4 to see growth on the same skills without students remembering the questions.
Revise before the test
- Year 3 daily maths review: a term of mixed warm-ups on the same content descriptions.
- Year 3 maths worksheets for any topic the test shows needs more practice.
- Test builder to make a shorter topic test with its own marking key.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Year 3 end-of-year maths test cover?
8 sections and 27 questions worth 35 marks, drawn from 7 Year 3 content descriptions in the Australian Curriculum (v9). Each section heading shows its AC9 code, so you can see exactly what each part checks.
Is the marking key correct?
Yes. Every question is generated in code and its answer is computed from the same numbers, so the marking key cannot contain a guessed or mistyped answer. Mark totals are added up in code too.
Why are there three versions?
Versions A, B and C use the same sections, question types and marks with different numbers. Use one as a pre-test and another at the end of the year, or give a different version to a student sitting it late.
Does it cover every strand?
It covers Number, Algebra, Measurement, Probability. Space and Statistics questions need a graph, a picture or a drawn shape, which a plain text test cannot hold, so check those with the matching Year 3 worksheets listed on this page.
Can I change the questions?
Yes. Open the test in the test builder to change topics, the number of questions or the marks for each section, then print your own version with its own marking key.
