How to use it in class
- Ask a question with a small set of possible answers, such as "What is your favorite fruit?" or "How many pets do you have?"
- Collect responses as a class, then type each one in as a data point.
- Read the frequency table together: which category or value shows up most?
- Look at the chart the tool draws, and discuss why it chose a bar graph, pictograph or dot plot.
- For numeric data, compare the mean, median, mode and range and talk about what each one tells you about the group.
Categorical vs numeric data
Categorical data sorts things into named groups, like colours, pets or yes/no answers. It cannot be added or averaged, so the useful summary is the mode, the category that comes up most.
Numeric data is made of measured or counted numbers, like test scores, ages or how many books someone read. It supports the full set of summary statistics: the mean (the total shared out evenly), the median (the middle value once sorted), the mode (the most common value) and the range (the spread from smallest to biggest).
Common questions
- How does it decide categorical or numeric?
- If every data point you type is a number, the tool treats the dataset as numeric (like quiz scores) and draws a dot plot with mean, median, mode and range. If any point is a word or label, it treats the whole dataset as categorical (like favorite colours) and draws a bar graph or pictograph with the mode.
- Can I edit or remove a data point?
- Yes. Click the small x on any data point to remove it, or use Clear all to start over. The frequency table, chart and stats update instantly as you add or remove points.
- Is there a limit to how much data I can enter?
- Up to 60 data points, which keeps charts readable for a classroom activity. This is a mini data-entry tool for exploring small, hand-collected datasets, not a spreadsheet.
