What the test checks
Marks by strand: Number 24, Algebra 6 (of 30). Questions worth 2 marks need two steps or some working, so give a mark for a correct method with a slip in the final answer.
| Code | Strand | What it asks for | Practised by |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC9M1N02 | Number | Partition into tens and ones. Split one- and two-digit numbers in different ways with materials, including breaking two-digit numbers into tens and ones. | Place Value |
| AC9M1N04 | Number | Add and subtract within 20. Add and subtract within twenty using materials, part-part-whole facts to ten and a range of strategies. | Number Bonds, Addition, Subtraction |
| AC9M1N05 | Number | Model adding and money problems. Use mathematical modelling to solve everyday adding and taking-away problems, including simple money transactions, with diagrams, materials and calculation strategies. | Word Problems |
| AC9M1A01 | Algebra | Skip-counting patterns. Recognise, continue and create sequences of numbers, shapes and objects made by skip counting, starting with twos, fives and tens. | Skip Counting, Patterns |
What to check alongside it
A written test cannot hold every Year 1 skill. These strands need a graph, a picture, a clock face or a drawn shape, so assess them with a worksheet or a hands-on task instead:
- Measurement (AC9M1M01, AC9M1M02, AC9M1M03): Year 1 comparing length worksheets, Year 1 calendar & dates worksheets
- Space (AC9M1SP01, AC9M1SP02): Year 1 position & maps worksheets
- Statistics (AC9M1ST01, AC9M1ST02): Year 1 sorting & counting data worksheets
Using the results
- Record the score by section, not just the total. A student with full marks on number but none on elapsed time needs different help from one who lost a mark in every section.
- Sections where most of the class dropped marks are the topics to revisit in the last weeks of term or to pass on to next year's teacher, with the AC9 code attached.
- Give Version A as a pre-test in Term 3 and Version B at the end of Term 4 to see growth on the same skills without students remembering the questions.
Revise before the test
- Year 1 daily maths review: a term of mixed warm-ups on the same content descriptions.
- Year 1 maths worksheets for any topic the test shows needs more practice.
- Test builder to make a shorter topic test with its own marking key.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Year 1 end-of-year maths test cover?
7 sections and 27 questions worth 30 marks, drawn from 4 Year 1 content descriptions in the Australian Curriculum (v9). Each section heading shows its AC9 code, so you can see exactly what each part checks.
Is the marking key correct?
Yes. Every question is generated in code and its answer is computed from the same numbers, so the marking key cannot contain a guessed or mistyped answer. Mark totals are added up in code too.
Why are there three versions?
Versions A, B and C use the same sections, question types and marks with different numbers. Use one as a pre-test and another at the end of the year, or give a different version to a student sitting it late.
Does it cover every strand?
It covers Number, Algebra. Measurement and Space and Statistics questions need a graph, a picture or a drawn shape, which a plain text test cannot hold, so check those with the matching Year 1 worksheets listed on this page.
Can I change the questions?
Yes. Open the test in the test builder to change topics, the number of questions or the marks for each section, then print your own version with its own marking key.
