The most advanced school mathematics course, designed to be studied alongside Mathematical Methods rather than on its own. It develops rigorous argument and proof, and extends into vectors, complex numbers, matrices and more demanding calculus and statistics, for students heading into mathematics-intensive degrees.

The four units
Like every ACARA senior secondary subject, Specialist Mathematics runs across four units: Units 1 and 2 are usually taken in Year 11, Units 3 and 4 in Year 12, with achievement standards described for each pair. ACARA numbers these units without separate names; the short focus labels below are ChalkBee's, added for scanability.

Complex numbers mature into the complex plane with polar form and roots, curve sketching broadens across rational and other functions, and vectors move into three dimensions with applications to lines and planes.

How it is assessed
School-based assessment plus external exams in every state, usually including a technology-free paper. Specialist is almost always taken together with Methods (many state syllabuses formally require it), and the pair is the standard preparation for mathematics, physics and engineering degrees.
