Mathematical Methods: Units 1 to 4 explained
Functions, calculus and statistics for STEM pathways
The core calculus course: functions, differential and integral calculus, and probability and statistics. It is the mathematics most university science, engineering, commerce and computing degrees assume, and it underpins state courses such as VCE Mathematical Methods, HSC Mathematics Advanced and QCE Mathematical Methods.

The four units
Like every ACARA senior secondary subject, Mathematical Methods runs across four units: Units 1 and 2 are usually taken in Year 11, Units 3 and 4 in Year 12, with achievement standards described for each pair. ACARA numbers these units without separate names; the short focus labels below are ChalkBee's, added for scanability.
The function toolkit is built first: polynomial, power and other functions and their graphs, then the trigonometric functions, and finally systematic counting leading into probability.

Exponential functions and their applications, arithmetic and geometric sequences and series, and the central idea of the course: rates of change and the first treatment of differential calculus.

Differentiation is extended (product, quotient and chain rules, applications to optimisation and curve sketching), integration is introduced with areas under curves, and probability moves to discrete random variables including the binomial distribution.

The logarithmic function completes the function families, continuous random variables and the normal distribution complete the probability strand, and the course closes with interval estimates for proportions, a first taste of statistical inference.

How it is assessed
School-based assessment plus a substantial external exam in every state (often split into technology-free and technology-active papers). Methods is the usual prerequisite or assumed-knowledge subject for STEM degrees, so external exam performance carries real weight.
