Essential Mathematics: Units 1 to 4 explained

Practical maths for work, personal and community life

The most applied of the four national maths courses: using mathematics confidently in real workplace, personal and community settings. Content is taught in contexts relevant to students' needs and interests, and it is generally a non-ATAR or applied pathway subject in the states that offer it.

The four units

Like every ACARA senior secondary subject, Essential Mathematics runs across four units: Units 1 and 2 are usually taken in Year 11, Units 3 and 4 in Year 12, with achievement standards described for each pair. ACARA numbers these units without separate names; the short focus labels below are ChalkBee's, added for scanability.

Everyday calculation, measurement and graphs

Practical number and measurement work in real contexts: calculating with percentages and rates, measuring and estimating, using simple algebra, and reading and drawing graphs.

Data, ratios, time and motion

Students represent and compare data, deepen their work with percentages, apply rates and ratios, and solve everyday problems involving time, distance and speed.

Applied measurement continues with scales, plans and models (reading house plans and maps to scale), further graph work, and designing simple data collections such as surveys and censuses.

Probability, Earth geometry and borrowing money

The final unit covers probability and relative frequencies in everyday situations, locating places and working with time zones using latitude and longitude, and the mathematics of compound interest and reducing-balance loans using technology.

How it is assessed

Mostly school-based assessment in the states that offer an Essential/applied maths course, built on practical tasks and investigations rather than a single external exam. Queensland's Essential Mathematics, for example, uses school assessment plus a common internal assessment.
