Applied maths without calculus: finance, statistics, networks

A broad applied course using discrete mathematics and statistics to solve problems in financial modelling, measurement, networks and data analysis, without the calculus of Methods. It underpins state courses such as VCE General Mathematics and HSC Mathematics Standard, and suits students needing solid quantitative skills for business, health and social science pathways.

The four units

Like every ACARA senior secondary subject, General Mathematics runs across four units: Units 1 and 2 are usually taken in Year 11, Units 3 and 4 in Year 12, with achievement standards described for each pair. ACARA numbers these units without separate names; the short focus labels below are ChalkBee's, added for scanability.

Consumer arithmetic, matrices and measurement

Money and consumer contexts drive the arithmetic: budgeting, wages, interest and best-buys. Students meet matrices for the first time as a tool for organising information, and solve measurement problems involving shape, surface area and volume.

Unit 2 Β· usually Year 11
Univariate data, trigonometry and linear equations

Students run the full statistical investigation cycle on single-variable data, apply trigonometry including non-right-angled triangles to practical problems, and model with linear equations and their graphs.

Bivariate data, sequences and networks

The Year 12 half begins with associations between two variables (scatterplots, correlation and least-squares regression), discrete growth and decay through arithmetic and geometric sequences, and an introduction to graphs and networks.

Time series, finance and decision mathematics

Students analyse time series data including smoothing and seasonality, apply recurrence-based finance to loans, investments and annuities, and use networks for decision problems such as shortest paths, minimum spanning trees and project scheduling.

How it is assessed

Typically a mix of school-based assessment and an external exam (weights vary by state; Queensland uses three internal assessments plus a 50 percent external exam, Victoria uses SACs plus two exams). Technology (CAS or graphics calculator) is assumed throughout in most states.
