What students learn
Derive the equation of a circle of given centre and radius using the Pythagorean Theorem, and complete the square to find the centre and radius of a circle given by an equation.
Worked example
Identify the centre and radius of the circle (x + 1)² + (y + 1)² = 16.
Answer: Centre (-1, -1), radius 4
Why: Compare with (x - h)² + (y - k)² = r². Here h = -1, k = -1, so the centre is (-1, -1). r² = 16, so r = = 4.
Generated and checked in code, so it is correct.
