CCSS HSA-REI.A.2 Worksheets

Algebra 2 · Reasoning with Equations & Inequalities

Solve simple rational and radical equations in one variable, and give examples showing how extraneous solutions may arise (for a rational equation, a candidate that makes a denominator zero must be rejected).

Below are free printable worksheets that support HSA-REI.A.2. Print them as PDFs, or generate a fresh one. Every math answer key is computed in code, so it is never wrong.

Teaching guide

What students learn

Solve simple rational and radical equations in one variable, and give examples showing how extraneous solutions may arise (for a rational equation, a candidate that makes a denominator zero must be rejected).

Worked example
Solve, checking for extraneous solutions: 6/(x - 4) = 3/(x - 6)
Answer: x = 8
Why: Multiply both sides by the denominator(s) and clear fractions to get 3x - 24 = 0, with candidate solution(s) x = 8. Domain restrictions: x ≠ 4, x ≠ 6. Check each candidate: x = 8 keeps every denominator non-zero, so it is valid. x = 8.

Generated and checked in code, so it is correct.
