What students learn
Rewrite a(x)/b(x) in the form q(x) + r(x)/b(x), where the degree of the remainder r(x) is less than the degree of the divisor b(x), using inspection, long division, or synthetic division.
Worked example
Divide using polynomial long division: (-4x⁴ - 8x³ + 4x² + 7x - 2) ÷ (x + 2)
Answer: Quotient: -4x³ + 4x - 1; Remainder: 0
Why: Long division gives quotient -4x³ + 4x - 1 and remainder 0. So (-4x⁴ - 8x³ + 4x² + 7x - 2)/(x + 2) = -4x³ + 4x - 1. Check: (x + 2)(-4x³ + 4x - 1) = -4x⁴ - 8x³ + 4x² + 7x - 2.
Generated and checked in code, so it is correct.
