Teaching guide

What students learn

Chooses and uses mental and written strategies for addition and subtraction with two- and three-digit numbers.

How to teach it

Start by counting on from the larger number, then move to partitioning into tens and ones and adding each part, and finally column addition with regrouping.

Worked example
74 + 43 =
Answer: 117
Why: tens: 70 + 40 = 110; ones: 4 + 3 = 7; total 110 + 7 = 117

Generated and checked in code, so it is correct.

Watch out for

Adding the tens and ones columns without carrying the regrouped ten, and always counting on from the first number rather than the larger.
