MA1-RWN-02, Represent numbers to 1000

Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) ยท Mathematics ยท Representing whole numbers

Reasons about different ways of showing whole numbers up to 1000, breaking numbers apart to use and record their values.

MA1-RWN-02 is an outcome from the NESA Mathematics K-10 Syllabus (2022), taught in NSW schools. Because Stage 1 spans Years 1 and 2, the worksheets below come from Year 1 and Year 2. Print them as PDFs, or generate a fresh one. Every maths answer key is computed in code, so it is never wrong.

Teaching guide

What students learn

Reasons about different ways of showing whole numbers up to 1000, breaking numbers apart to use and record their values.

How to teach it

Build numbers with base-ten blocks or bundles of ten, then say the value of each digit ('the 3 is worth 30'). Expand numbers (300 + 40 + 2).

Worked example
What is the value of the digit 3 in 36?
Answer: 30

Generated and checked in code, so it is correct.

Watch out for

Reading a digit at face value regardless of its column, and dropping the zero as a place-holder (e.g. writing 32 for 302).

Sets A-F are the same worksheet with different questions - print any (or all) for fresh practice.
