100 multiplication facts timed test

The classic one-page fluency check: 100 multiplication facts, a box for the time taken and a score out of 100. Choose every fact to 10 x 10 or a mix to 12 x 12, pick a version, and print. The answer key is calculated in code, so marking is quick and never wrong.

How to run a 100-fact test

  1. Hand the sheet out face down. Everyone starts together; show a timer on the board.
  2. Students write their finish time in the Time taken box, or stop at a fixed time (say five minutes).
  3. Mark from the answer key page, or swap and mark in pairs.
  4. Each student circles the facts they missed. Those are next week's practice, using the times tables maker to print just those facts.
  5. Repeat with a new version every week or two and compare with their own last score.

Which year level?

In Australia, recalling multiplication facts to 10 x 10 is a Year 4 expectation (AC9M4A02), and the UK Year 4 multiplication check covers tables to 12 x 12. The test suits Years 3 to 6: as a target in Year 4, and as a quick maintenance check in Years 5 and 6. See which times tables are taught in which year.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a 100-fact test take?

There is no single standard. Many teachers start with five minutes and aim to bring it down over the term, and some use a fixed time and count how many are correct. What matters is that each student compares against their own last score, not against the class.

What is the difference between the 1 to 10 and 1 to 12 versions?

The 1 to 10 test has every fact from 1 x 1 to 10 x 10 exactly once, so a full score means every fact to 10 x 10 is known. The 1 to 12 test is 100 facts drawn from the 144 facts to 12 x 12, for classes working on the 11s and 12s.

Are the answers correct?

Yes. Each answer is calculated in code as the product of the two numbers, so the key can never contain a typo.

Are timed tests a good idea?

Used lightly, yes: a short, low-stakes timed check shows which facts are automatic. Keep it private and personal, skip it for students who find timing stressful, and pair it with untimed practice on the facts they missed.
