Position, patterns and turns
Whole and fractional turns in Year 1, then sequences, straight-line movement and right-angle turns in Year 2

Be the robot and follow the route
Mark a start and finish on the floor. One pupil is the robot and another gives one instruction at a time: move forward, turn a quarter turn clockwise, then move forward again.
A correct route depends on both position and orientation. A robot can stand in the right square but face the wrong way. Repeated movement instructions also form a sequence, just like repeated colour or shape patterns.

Teach it: concrete, pictorial, abstract
The lesson moves from things students can hold, to pictures and diagrams, to the written maths. The diagrams below are drawn from data, so they are accurate and print cleanly. Teach straight from them.
1. Describe position precisely
ConcretePlace a toy beside, between, above, below, in front of and behind classroom objects. The listener should be able to move the toy correctly without seeing the speaker point.

2. Build turns from a full turn
ConcreteStand facing a fixed wall marker. A whole turn returns to the start direction, a half turn faces the opposite way, a quarter turn changes direction by one right angle, and a three-quarter turn makes three such steps.
Name the size of the turn separately from its direction. A quarter turn can be clockwise or anti-clockwise.

3. Order objects in repeating patterns and sequences
PictorialBuild a repeating sequence, such as red circle, blue square, blue square. Identify the smallest unit that repeats, bracket it, then copy the whole unit to continue the pattern.
Continue: triangle, circle, circle, triangle, circle, circle, ...
- Find the repeating unit: triangle, circle, circle.
- The shown sequence contains two complete repeats.
- Begin the next repeat with triangle.
Answer: The next object is a triangle.
- What is the smallest repeating unit?
- Could a different arrangement contain the same objects but form a different sequence?
4. Combine straight moves and right-angle turns
AbstractWrite a short route as an ordered list. For example: move forward 2 squares, quarter turn clockwise, move forward 3 squares. Follow the instructions one at a time and mark both the final position and final facing direction.
In Year 2, connect each quarter turn to one right angle, a half turn to two right angles and a three-quarter turn to three right angles.
- Would changing the order of the instructions keep the same route?

Common misconceptions and how to address them
MisconceptionClockwise always means turn right.
Why it happens: When describing a body turn from a standard forward-facing start, the two often coincide.
How to address it: Use a clock-face arrow and rotate objects from several starting orientations. Clockwise names rotational direction, not a fixed destination.
MisconceptionA half turn means stop halfway through the movement.
Why it happens: The word half is interpreted as half the distance instead of half of a full rotation.
How to address it: Trace a full circle and shade half of its circumference. Make two quarter turns and compare the final facing direction.
MisconceptionA pattern is continued by choosing any object already present.
Why it happens: The pupil sees repetition but has not isolated the smallest repeating unit.
How to address it: Bracket one complete unit and copy that entire bracket, in order, each time.
Guided practice (with answers)
1. You face north and make a clockwise quarter turn. Which way do you face?
Answer: East.
2. You face east and make a half turn. Which way do you face?
Answer: West.
3. Continue: square, circle, square, circle, ...
Answer: Square. The repeating unit is square, circle.
4. How many right angles make a three-quarter turn?
Answer: Three right angles.

Differentiation
- Keep a large clock-face arrow visible for clockwise and anti-clockwise.
- Physically perform each instruction before drawing the route.
- Use two-item repeating patterns before patterns with a three-item unit.
- Find two different routes with the same start and finish.
- Write the reverse instructions that return a robot to its starting point.
- Create a pattern whose repeating unit contains four objects and challenge a partner to identify it.

Check position language, sequence structure and rotational direction separately.
1. A robot faces north. It makes a clockwise three-quarter turn. Which way does it face?
Answer: West.
2. Continue: red, red, blue, red, red, blue, ...
Answer: Red. The repeating unit is red, red, blue.
3. How many quarter turns make a half turn?
Answer: Two quarter turns.
Teacher notes and timings
- Year 1 does not require clockwise and anti-clockwise labels, but introducing the clock-hand direction informally prepares pupils for the explicit Year 2 requirement.
- Always record final orientation as well as final position. Spatial reasoning is incomplete if pupils track only the square reached.
- Use consistent viewpoint language when left and right could be ambiguous.
