What is a quotient?
A quotient is the result of dividing one number by another. In 20 Γ· 4 = 5, the quotient is 5. If the division does not work out evenly, what is left over is called the remainder.
Examples
- The quotient of 12 Γ· 3 is 4.
- 15 Γ· 2 = 7 remainder 1, so the quotient is 7.
- 100 Γ· 10 has a quotient of 10.
Quick facts
- The number being divided is the dividend; the number you divide by is the divisor.
- Dividing by 1 gives a quotient equal to the original number.
