Multiplication is repeated addition of equal groups, 4 × 3 means four groups of three.

How to teach it

Worked example

11 × 2 =
Answer: 22
Why: 10 × 2 = 20; 1 × 2 = 2; add: 20 + 2 = 22

Common mistake

Confusing the number of groups with the number in each group, and adding when a word problem implies repeated groups.
