What is money & change?
Money maths adds amounts and works out change in dollars and cents (or the local currency).
How to teach it
Add amounts and make change by counting up to the next dollar, keeping dollars and cents lined up. Relate to decimals.
In an Australian classroom
Australian money is dollars and cents. There is no 1c or 2c coin, so cash totals are rounded to the nearest 5c while card payments are not, which is worth saying out loud when students check their change.
Worked example
Common mistake
Misaligning the decimal point and counting change down instead of up.
