What is addition?

Addition combines two or more amounts to find the total (the sum).

How to teach it

Start by counting on from the larger number, then move to partitioning into tens and ones and adding each part, and finally column addition with regrouping.

Worked example

8881 + 6987 =
Answer: 15868
Why: tens: 8880 + 6980 = 15860; ones: 1 + 7 = 8; total 15860 + 8 = 15868

Common mistake

Adding the tens and ones columns without carrying the regrouped ten, and always counting on from the first number rather than the larger.
