Physics: Units 1 to 4 explained

From heating and motion to fields, relativity and the quantum

The study of matter, energy and their interactions, from everyday heating and motion through to fields, relativity and quantum theory. Senior Physics is strongly mathematical (Methods is commonly recommended alongside it) and is assumed knowledge for most engineering and physical science degrees.

The four units

Like every ACARA senior secondary subject, Physics runs across four units: Units 1 and 2 are usually taken in Year 11, Units 3 and 4 in Year 12, with achievement standards described for each pair.

Unit 1 Β· usually Year 11
Thermal, nuclear and electrical physics

Energy transfer and transformation across three domains: heating processes explained by the kinetic particle model and thermodynamics, radioactivity and nuclear reactions where mass converts to energy, and electrical circuits where charge carries and transforms energy.

Unit 2 Β· usually Year 11
Linear motion and waves

Motion in one dimension described and predicted with Newton's laws, then wave behaviour in mechanical systems and sound. The unit closes with the wave model of light and the wide range of phenomena it explains.

Unit 3 Β· usually Year 12
Gravity and electromagnetism

The field idea unifies the unit: gravitational fields explain projectile and satellite motion, and electromagnetic interactions explain motors, generators and transformers. Students see how oscillating charges produce electromagnetic waves.

Unit 4 Β· usually Year 12
Revolutions in modern physics

How the shortcomings of classical physics forced new theories: special relativity, the quantum theory of light and matter, and the Standard Model of particle physics. Students examine the evidence behind each revolution and its impact on technology and our picture of the universe.

How it is assessed

Set by each state authority, typically practical investigations plus an external exam with substantial quantitative problem solving. Confidence with algebra and functions matters; most states recommend taking Mathematical Methods alongside Physics.
