Chemistry: Units 1 to 4 explained

Structure, reactions, equilibrium and synthesis

The central science of matter and its transformations: what substances are made of, why they behave as they do, and how new substances are designed and made. Senior Chemistry is a common prerequisite or assumed subject for medicine, pharmacy, engineering and science degrees.

The four units

Like every ACARA senior secondary subject, Chemistry runs across four units: Units 1 and 2 are usually taken in Year 11, Units 3 and 4 in Year 12, with achievement standards described for each pair.

Unit 1 Β· usually Year 11
Chemical fundamentals: structure, properties and reactions

The foundations: atomic structure and bonding models, and how they explain the properties of materials. Students use these models to predict the products of chemical reactions and to analyse the energy changes that accompany them.

Unit 2 Β· usually Year 11
Molecular interactions and reactions

Building on bonding, students relate molecular structure to properties and behaviour, including the intermolecular forces that govern solids, liquids and solutions. They investigate the factors that influence how fast reactions proceed.

Unit 3 Β· usually Year 12
Equilibrium, acids and redox reactions

Reversible reactions and equilibrium models take centre stage, applied to acid-base chemistry and to oxidation-reduction reactions including electrochemical and galvanic cells. Students analyse how conditions shift equilibrium and energy transfer.

Unit 4 Β· usually Year 12
Structure, synthesis and design

The course culminates in synthesis, particularly organic synthesis: how structure and reaction models are used to design and make molecules. Students consider current and future applications of chemical design, from fuels to pharmaceuticals.

How it is assessed

Set by each state authority, usually school-based assessment with mandatory practical work plus an external exam. Quantitative problem solving (stoichiometry, equilibrium calculations) is a consistent focus of the external papers.
