Teaching guide

What students learn

Shows that whole numbers describe quantity, connecting a count to the size of a collection.

How to teach it

Count real objects out loud, touching each one once, then match the count to the written numeral. Practise counting on from a number, not always from one.

Worked example
1, ___, 3, 4, 5
Answer: 2

Generated and checked in code, so it is correct.

Watch out for

Skipping or double-counting objects (weak one-to-one correspondence), and thinking the last number said is just a label rather than the total.
