MA3-DATA-01, Many-to-one graphs

Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6) ยท Mathematics ยท Data

Builds graphs that use many-to-one scales, where one symbol or interval stands for several data values.

MA3-DATA-01 is an outcome from the NESA Mathematics K-10 Syllabus (2022), taught in NSW schools. Because Stage 3 spans Years 5 and 6, the worksheets below come from Year 5 and Year 6. Print them as PDFs, or generate a fresh one. Every maths answer key is computed in code, so it is never wrong.

Teaching guide

What students learn

Builds graphs that use many-to-one scales, where one symbol or interval stands for several data values.

How to teach it

Work the whole cycle: pose a question, collect the data into a table, choose a display, then interpret it (total, mode, range, differences) and report what it shows.

Worked example
How many students took part in this survey altogether?
Answer: 33
Why: 13 + 3 + 5 + 12 = 33

Generated and checked in code, so it is correct.

Watch out for

Collecting data before the question is clear, and confusing the range (spread) with the total.
