Teaching guide

What students learn

Picks and applies efficient strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems.

How to teach it

Read it twice, underline the question and the numbers, draw a bar model or picture, choose the operation, then check the answer makes sense.

Worked example
Leo had 754 cookies and gave away 70. How many cookies are left?
Answer: 684
Why: subtract: 754 โˆ’ 70 = 684

Generated and checked in code, so it is correct.

Watch out for

Grabbing the numbers and guessing the operation from a key word instead of the situation (e.g. 'more' does not always mean add).
