How to teach it

Run a pretend stall: money taken in minus what the supplies cost is the profit. Sort the family's expenses into fixed (same every month) and variable (changes), then split an allowance into spend, save and share.

Worked example

Ivy's lemonade stand takes in $25 in a day. The lemons, sugar and cups cost $17. What is the profit?
Answer: $8
Why: $25 - $17 = $8

Common mistake

Calling all money taken in 'profit' without subtracting costs, and labelling any large expense 'fixed' when fixed really means unchanging.
