Reading Comprehension: The Romans in Britain

Read the passage carefully, then answer the questions in full sentences.

In 55 BC, the Roman general Julius Caesar crossed the sea and landed in Britain with his soldiers. British warriors fought back hard, and storms wrecked many of his ships. Caesar returned the next year with a bigger force and won some battles, but he still did not stay. He sailed back to Gaul, and Britain remained independent.

Nearly a hundred years passed before Rome tried again. In AD 43, the emperor Claudius sent thousands of soldiers, called legions, to conquer Britain. This time the Romans stayed for good. They built long, straight roads to move soldiers and goods quickly, and they founded busy new towns.

Roman rule was not always welcomed. Around AD 60, a British queen named Boudica led a huge rebellion after Roman officials treated her family with terrible cruelty. Her warriors burned three important Roman towns before the rebellion was finally crushed.

Later, the Romans built Hadrian's Wall, a massive stone wall stretching across northern Britain, to guard the empire's edge. When Roman rule ended around AD 410, the roads, towns and walls the Romans had built stayed behind, shaping Britain for centuries afterwards.
