Noah's new lunchbox was not new at all. His aunt had found the dented metal box at a weekend market and scrubbed it until the rocket ships on its lid shone again. On Monday, Noah heard something crackle beneath the loose lining. He peeled back one corner and found a folded map drawn in purple pencil.
The map showed the school oval, the old fig tree and an X beside the garden shed. After class, Noah and his friend Suri followed it. Behind the shed, exactly where the X promised, they found a jar buried under three flat stones. Inside were six faded photographs and a note from the school's gardening club, dated 1986.
Noah expected treasure. Instead, the photographs showed students planting the same fig tree that now shaded half the oval. He and Suri returned the jar to the principal. She placed it in the library display, beside Noah's rocket lunchbox and its secret map.
