Before colonisation, and still today, Australia is made up of many different First Nations, each with its own Country or Place, its own language, and its own customs and laws. AIATSIS, Australia's institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies, says there are more than 250 Indigenous languages, including around 800 dialects. AIATSIS publishes a famous map of Indigenous Australia, created in 1996. The map attempts to show the general locations of the language, social or nation groups of Aboriginal Australia. The map's boundaries are not meant to be exact, because the map was drawn from published books and papers, not from the nations themselves marking their own borders. AIATSIS says it is not suitable for deciding native title or land claims. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies have their own forms of social organisation, including family and kinship systems that set out how people are related and what responsibilities they hold. Through all the change since colonisation, First Nations peoples have kept a continuous connection to Country: the language, family ties and identity that Country carries are still passed from generation to generation today.
