Worked example
A cyclist's distance-time graph is plotted from home: distance is 0 km at 0 minutes, 36 km at 80 minutes, still 36 km at 91 minutes, and back to 0 km at 199 minutes. Find the average speed for the FIRST stage of the journey (0 to 80 minutes), in km/h.
Answer: 27 km/h
Why: Average speed = distance / time. The first stage covers 36 km in 80 minutes, which is 8060 hours. Speed = 36 / (8060) = 36 x 60 / 80 = 27 km/h.
