Teaching guide

What students learn

Recognize that a digit is worth ten times the place to its right and a tenth of the place to its left.

How to teach it

Build numbers with base-ten blocks or bundles of ten, then say the value of each digit ('the 3 is worth 30'). Expand numbers (300 + 40 + 2).

Worked example
What is the value of the digit 1 in 612877?
Answer: 10000

Generated and checked in code, so it is correct.

Watch out for

Reading a digit at face value regardless of its column, and dropping the zero as a place-holder (e.g. writing 32 for 302).
