Comparing, measuring, time and UK money

Measurement answers real classroom questions

Which ribbon is longer? Which bag is heavier? Which bottle holds more? What happens before lunch, and when does home time begin? Measurement gives pupils tools and language for questions they already ask.

This sequence begins with direct comparisons and informal units, then connects those practical ideas to the calendar, an analogue clock and the current set of UK coin and banknote denominations.

Teaching sequence

Teach it: concrete, pictorial, abstract

The lesson moves from things students can hold, to pictures and diagrams, to the written maths. The diagrams below are drawn from data, so they are accurate and print cleanly. Teach straight from them.

1. Compare directly before measuring

Concrete

Align two ribbons at one end to compare length. Use a balance for mass. Pour the same cupful into containers to compare capacity. Time two short activities with a sand timer. Every comparison needs a common starting point or common unit.

Require a complete comparison sentence: the blue ribbon is longer than the red ribbon. Avoid accepting a bare pointing answer.

Check for understanding, ask
  • Why must the ribbon ends be aligned?
  • Does a taller container always hold more?
  • Which activity was quicker, and what evidence shows that?

2. Measure with equal informal units

Concrete

Measure a desk with identical cubes placed end to end, with no gaps or overlaps. Compare masses with identical balance weights, capacity with the same cup, and short durations with the same timer.

Worked example

A pencil spans 7 equal cubes placed end to end. What should be recorded?

  1. Check the cubes start at one end of the pencil.
  2. Check there are no gaps or overlaps.
  3. Count all 7 equal cubes.

Answer: The pencil is 7 cubes long.

  • What unit must be written beside the number 7?

3. Sequence events and use date language

Pictorial

Order picture cards from a familiar day: wake up, arrive at school, eat lunch, go home, sleep. Say first, next, before, after, morning, afternoon and evening. Then connect repeated days to a week, weeks to months and months to a year.

Use yesterday, today and tomorrow with an actual classroom calendar. Move the marker every day so the words remain tied to a real changing date.

  • What happens before lunch in our class timetable?
  • If today is Tuesday, what day was yesterday and what day is tomorrow?
  • Which comes first in the year, March or May?

4. Tell and draw hour and half-hour times

Pictorial

On the hour, the long minute hand points to 12 and the short hour hand points exactly to the hour number. At half past, the long hand points to 6 because 30 minutes have passed, and the short hand sits halfway between two hour numbers.

Worked example

Show half past 3 on an analogue clock.

  1. Place the long minute hand on 6 to show 30 minutes.
  2. Place the short hour hand halfway between 3 and 4.
  3. Read the time aloud as half past 3.

Answer: 3:30, or half past 3.

5. Recognise current UK coins and banknotes

Pictorial

Teach value separately from size. Current circulating coin denominations are 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2. Current Bank of England banknote denominations are £5, £10, £20 and £50.

Sort labelled representations by pence and pounds, then order them by value. Point out that £1 means 100p and that a physically larger item is not automatically worth more.

Watch for

Common misconceptions and how to address them

MisconceptionThe object that starts farther to the right is longer.

Why it happens: The pupil compares endpoints without aligning the starting points.

How to address it: Place both objects against the same straight baseline before comparing their far ends.

MisconceptionMore measuring pieces always means a longer object.

Why it happens: Different-sized units or gaps make the counts incomparable.

How to address it: Use identical units, end to end, with no gaps or overlaps, and name the unit in the answer.

MisconceptionAt half past 3, the hour hand still points exactly at 3.

Why it happens: Clock worksheets sometimes simplify the hour hand and hide its continuous movement.

How to address it: Move a geared teaching clock slowly from 3 o'clock to 4 o'clock and stop halfway, with the hour hand visibly between 3 and 4.

MisconceptionThe largest coin or banknote picture must have the greatest value.

Why it happens: Young pupils often use physical size as a shortcut for value.

How to address it: Read the printed denomination first and compare values in pence. Include pairs where size and value do not increase together.

  • Use classroom routines for chronological vocabulary before moving to unfamiliar stories.
  • Teach o'clock securely before introducing half past.

  • Order three or more objects by a chosen measure and justify every comparison.
  • Estimate before measuring, then discuss whether the estimate was reasonable.

  • This is deliberately a sequence rather than one lesson. Revisit comparison language across the term and connect chronology and clock work to the real class timetable.

  • The curriculum says mass/weight and capacity/volume together at this stage. Use the everyday words pupils hear while modelling the more precise mathematical terms.
