What is an inference?
To make an inference is to work out something that is not stated directly, using clues in the text together with what you already know. If a story says a character is shivering and pulling on a coat, you can infer that it is cold. Good readers infer all the time.
Examples
- 'She slammed the door and folded her arms.' You infer she is angry.
- Wet umbrellas by the door suggest it has been raining.
- Clues plus what you know make an inference.
Quick facts
- An inference is not stated in the text, you work it out.
- Authors often show feelings through clues rather than saying them outright.
