The applied senior English course, focused on comprehending, communicating and arguing effectively in everyday, community and workplace contexts rather than on literary analysis. It suits students heading to work, training or courses that do not require the analytical English subjects, while still meeting the English requirement of the senior certificates that offer it.

The four units
Like every ACARA senior secondary subject, Essential English runs across four units: Units 1 and 2 are usually taken in Year 11, Units 3 and 4 in Year 12, with achievement standards described for each pair. ACARA numbers these units without separate names; the short focus labels below are ChalkBee's, added for scanability.
Students comprehend and respond to the ideas and information in texts drawn from everyday, community and work contexts. They build practical comprehension strategies, learn to interact effectively with others, and create their own texts for a range of real or imagined purposes.
The unit centres on interpreting ideas and arguments across texts by examining structure and language features. Students analyse how purpose, context and meaning connect, develop their own interpretations, and create texts aimed at specific audiences and purposes.
Students explore how texts present differing perspectives, analysing attitudes and the language choices that carry them. They reflect on multiple interpretations, build reasoned arguments and practise communicating persuasively while acknowledging other viewpoints.
Students engage with a community, local or global issue, synthesising information from several sources and analysing how authors use persuasive techniques. They construct coherent arguments and create texts that show control of purpose, audience and context.
How it is assessed
Assessment is school-based in most states (Essential English is commonly an applied or non-ATAR pathway subject), built around practical responding and creating tasks such as workplace texts, presentations and issue-based arguments. Check your state syllabus, as names and rules differ by jurisdiction.
