What is NSW Foundation Style?
NSW Foundation Style is the handwriting style taught in New South Wales schools and used in the ACT. Children start with Foundation print: simple letters built from a small set of movements, so each letter can later grow a join without being relearned.
ChalkBee prints it with Edu NSW ACT Foundation, one of Google's free Australian school fonts made to match the state styles. Its single-storey a and g look the way children write them, not the way most book fonts print them.
How it is usually taught
- Kindergarten to Year 2: Foundation print letters, correct starting points and sizing on the line.
- Around Year 3: pre-cursive letters with small exit strokes, then joined (cursive) writing as schools introduce it.
- Schools set their own timing within the syllabus, so check your school's handwriting scope and sequence.
How to make NSW Foundation practice sheets
- Start with letters in Kindergarten: open the letters sheet and type just the letters you are teaching this week (for example the c-family: c a d g o q), or leave it blank for the whole alphabet.
- Move to words once letters sit on the line: the words sheet takes up to five of your spelling or sight words.
- Copy sentences for spacing and punctuation with the sentences sheet; type your own, one per line.
- Print name tracing for each child in the same style, so the name on their book matches the letters on the wall.
Keep sessions short and frequent: a few minutes of careful letter formation every day does more than one long page a week. Watch where each letter starts, since a wrong starting point is much harder to fix later than untidy letters.
Where it is used
