Teaching guide

What students learn

Recognise and use rates to solve problems that compare two related quantities measured in different units.

How to teach it

Treat a rate as a comparison of two different units (km per hour, dollars per kg), keep the units with the numbers, and use a rate table to convert or compare.

Worked example
Simplify the ratio 10 : 45 to lowest terms.
Answer: 2 : 9
Why: Divide both by their HCF (5): 10/5 : 45/5 = 2 : 9

Generated and checked in code, so it is correct.

Watch out for

Dropping the units so the comparison loses meaning, and confusing a rate (different units) with a ratio (same units).
